Sortstash LLC ("Sortstash," "we," "us," or "our") has prepared this Privacy Policy to explain what personal data we collect, how we use and share that data, and your choices regarding our data practices.

We designed Sortstash with privacy in mind. The App runs locally on your computer, your files stay where they are, and we collect minimal information about you.

1. Information We Collect

Information You Provide

Purchase Information: When you purchase Sortstash, Paddle — our merchant of record — collects payment and billing information. We receive your email address and license key assignment but do not receive or store your payment card details. See Section 4 for more about Paddle.

Support Communications: If you contact us for support, we collect the information you provide, such as your email address and the content of your message.

Information Collected Automatically

License Verification: When you activate the App, it communicates with our activation server to verify your license. This transmission includes:

• Your license key
• A device identifier (a salted hash generated locally from your machine ID — it is not derived from any personal information, but it is associated with your license, and therefore with your email address, so that we can enforce the device limit)
• The device's hostname, so you can tell your own devices apart when managing your license
• App version and operating system

This information is used solely to enforce license limits (5 devices per license) and is not used for tracking or analytics.

If you use Sortstash on a free trial, we store only the device identifier and the trial dates. A trial is not associated with your name or email address unless you go on to purchase a license.

Telemetry and Crash Reports (Opt-In Only): The App may offer optional, opt-in telemetry and crash reporting. If you choose to enable this:

• Crash reports include technical information about errors (stack traces, App version, OS version)
• Usage telemetry includes anonymous, aggregated feature usage statistics
• These never include your file names, file contents, or personal data

You can disable telemetry at any time in the App's preferences. Telemetry is disabled by default.

Website Analytics: Our website (sortstash.com) may use privacy-respecting analytics to understand site traffic. We do not use tracking cookies or cross-site advertising trackers.

Information We Do NOT Collect

Sortstash does NOT collect, transmit, or store:

• Your file names, paths, or contents
• Your file index or search queries
• Your Views or filter configurations
• Your cloud service credentials (OAuth tokens are stored locally only)
• Screenshots or recordings of your screen
• Keystroke or activity logging
• Any data from your files or cloud accounts

The App operates locally. Your file index exists only on your device.

2. How We Use Information

We use the limited information we collect to:

• Provide and maintain the Service: Verify licenses, deliver updates, respond to support requests
• Improve the App: If you opt in to telemetry, we use aggregated data to identify bugs and prioritize features
• Communicate with you: Send important notices about your license, security updates, or changes to our terms (we do not send marketing emails unless you subscribe)
• Comply with legal obligations: Respond to lawful requests from authorities

3. How We Share Information

We share information only in these limited circumstances:

Service Providers: We use a small number of service providers who assist with:

• Payment processing (Paddle)
• Hosting and infrastructure
• Customer support tools

These providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and use it only for the services they provide to us.

Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or government request, or to protect our rights, property, or safety, or that of our users or the public.

Business Transfers: If Sortstash is acquired, merged, or sells substantially all its assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or prominent notice before any such transfer.

We do NOT sell your personal information. We do NOT share your information with advertisers or data brokers.

4. Payment Processing

Purchases are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle"), who acts as our merchant of record. Paddle collects and processes your payment information subject to their own privacy policy:

Paddle handles all payment data, billing inquiries, and refund processing. We receive only the information necessary to assign your license (email address, transaction ID).

5. Cloud Service Connections

When you connect a cloud storage service (such as OneDrive or Dropbox) to Sortstash:

• Authentication uses OAuth 2.0, the industry standard for secure authorization
• Your OAuth access tokens are stored locally on your device, encrypted using your operating system's secure credential storage
• Tokens are NEVER transmitted to Sortstash servers
• We cannot access your cloud storage accounts

Each cloud provider has their own privacy policy governing their handling of your data. Disconnecting a cloud service in Sortstash revokes the App's access.

6. Data Retention

License Data: We retain license verification records (license key, device identifiers, activation dates) for the duration of your license and a reasonable period afterward for support and legal purposes.

Support Communications: We retain support correspondence for as long as necessary to resolve your issue and for quality assurance.

Telemetry Data: If you opt in, aggregated telemetry data is retained for up to 24 months. Crash reports are retained for up to 12 months.

Local Data: Your local file index, Views, and preferences are stored on your device and are not accessible to us. Uninstalling the App removes this local data.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information:

Access and Portability: You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.

Correction: You can request that we correct inaccurate information.

Deletion: You can request that we delete your personal information. Note that we may retain certain information as required by law or for legitimate business purposes.

Opt-Out of Telemetry: You can disable optional telemetry at any time in the App's preferences.

Unsubscribe: Any marketing emails include an unsubscribe link.

8. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including:

• Encryption of data in transit (TLS/HTTPS)
• Secure credential storage for license keys and OAuth tokens (using OS-level secure storage)
• Limited access to customer data among our team
• Regular security reviews

No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you believe your license or account has been compromised, contact us immediately.

9. International Data Transfers

Sortstash is based in the United States. If you are located outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate.

We take steps to ensure that your information receives an adequate level of protection in the jurisdictions in which we process it.

10. Children's Privacy

Sortstash is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email (if we have your email address) or by posting a notice on our website before the changes take effect.

The "Last Updated" date at the top indicates when this policy was last revised. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
